Claire Scanlan writes: 12 lovely (brave?!) souls joined us on our Berkhamsted Circular, on a blustery but sunny Saturday morning. We took a moment to acknowledge the passing of our dear friend Martin before we headed off for the hills (note plural!!). We walked and talked our way up hills and down dales, through beautiful vibrant bluebell filled woods, passed watercress growing in the stream, up a few more hills (which obviously no one noticed!) before taking a pause for a peanut butter and chocolate chip cookie at the top of one such ascent.
There was much chatter, laughter, a few more hills, a haunted bridge and then the highlight of the day was the lunch/pub stop in Frithdean where we had a lovely surprise awaiting us (no not the Maltesers you got with your coffee, although that was a nice touch!!), in a guest appearance by Hilary & Bob. So good to see them and everyone was very appreciative of Hillary’s chocolate cake which powered us up the last few undulations and through the Alpine Meadow where Glenn did his best Steve Irwin (Crocodile Hunter) impression with a (plastic) ‘lizard’…need I say more?!
There was a bonus extra for the keen beans, who joined us for a lap of the perimeter of Berkhamsted Castle, which obviously added at least another 2-3 miles onto the total!
A lovely day all round, thank you for joining us and for being such a fantastic bunch
Martin – this one was for you. We love you dearly, will all miss you enormously, but you will forever remain with us, in our hearts, our memories, our conversations and of course on our walks.
