With several of our regular walkers otherwise engaged, it was left to the “out-of-towners” from across three counties to provide a companionable little group to walk on this perfect autumn day. The trees were just tinged with colour, with the promise of much more to come. We made our way through Hogback Wood to Forty Green and thence to Penn, where we were greeted by church bells, perhaps for a wedding. Ascending through fields towards Winchmore Hill, we met two ladies walking their own two dogs and one “client”, none of whom seemed to mind stopping for a ten-minute chat and photo. Lunch was eaten sitting by the cricket pitch at Penn Street, and followed by a welcome cup of tea in the Squirrel pub. The sun came out for the afternoon, lighting up the tree canopy and occasionally dappling down to the woodland floor as we progressed through Penn Wood and Common Wood to Penn. Then it was back to Forty Green and Beaconsfield by a different route, by now all feeling a little weary and looking forward to a relaxing evening with a glass of wine. Thank you for your company; it was a pleasure to introduce you to an old favourite walk of ours.
